Product overviewAEROCRON® electrocoat primer is PPG's chrome-free, water-based electrocoat primer formulated for aerospace applications. It provides adhesion and corrosion protection for common aerospace substrates and is compatible with industry-standard pretreatments and topcoats.
Substrates- Aluminum alloys: 2024, 2050, 2214, 5083, 6056, 6061, 7075, 7175 and AS7G
- Titanium
- Stainless steel
Application and process- Electrocoating (electrically driven dip) enables coating of conductive aircraft parts, including recessed areas, and eliminates overspray compared with spray processes.
- Precise film-thickness control ensures uniform coverage on complex geometries, reducing runs, drips and sags.
- Thermal cure cycle enables immediate handling of fully cured parts.
- Process can be automated and integrated into closed-loop lines to minimize waste and labor.
Environmental considerations- Chrome-free, water-based formulation.
- High transfer efficiency: approximately 90–95% material usage.
- Low VOC: below 150 g/l.
- Near-zero waste discharge due to closed-loop electrocoat process.
Performance- Provides corrosion protection and improved topcoat adhesion for durable aircraft finishes.
- Designed to deliver barrier and corrosion-resistance properties.
- Qualified to SAE/AMS-3144.
- Weight-saving properties that can contribute to reduced fuel consumption compared with traditional spray primers.
Health, safety and productivity benefits- Chrome-free and low-VOC formulation reduces worker exposure to hazardous substances and lowers fire risk.
- System operation and maintenance can be performed by a single operator; supports non-uniform line loading where applicable.
- Immediate part handling reduces cycle time and paint waste.
