Basic Architecture Woodward offers spur gearheads in an array of sizes in inch-series diameter codes from Size 8 to 80 (.8” to 8”), commensurate with our standard servo motors and planetary gearheads. Woodward furnishes these units as complete vehicle level line-replaceable units (LRUs) when desired by the program maintenance philosophy. Woodward’s cost-effective spur gearhead has a high ratio per unit weight and volume. The bearing or bearing pair which supports the output shaft is generally small, and of short dimensional span, which can make it undesirable to engage high side loads. Our spur gearheads are often used between our own motor and planetary or right-angle gearhead modules as a way of developing higher ratios between the motor and the payload being actuated. Embedded Impact Clutches Woodward can embed slip clutches within the spur pass, which protects all of the gearing in the system against impact loading should it encounter a hard stop under conditions of high motor velocity.
