Description

This aircraft hangar is the largest in the world for the US Navy. The dual-purpose layout required for this unique facility allowed it to initially hangar eight P-3C Orion aircraft and ultimately six of the larger P-8A Poseidon turbofan aircraft. To meet the Navy’s demand for multiple openings for various aircraft, clear spans of 455' and 428' were necessary at the front of the hangar. To achieve these record-setting clear spans, Butler Heavy Structures utilized three-story-tall box trusses. During erection, these robust trusses were assembled in sections on the ground then lifted into place with the entire system bearing on temporary shoring towers. Following careful removal of the shoring towers, a 15-panel vertical lift fabric hangar door system by MEGADOOR® was installed, supported by the box trusses. The structure also supports multiple overhead cranes for maintenance of the aircraft. The 3-D structural design by Butler Heavy Structures proved to be over 25% more efficient than the nearest conventional solution. The size, complexity, and economy of this successful project demonstrate the capabilities and advantages Butler Heavy Structures has to offer. This project achieved a LEED® Silver rating from the Green Building Certification Institute.
