Description

Overview
Lycoming announces a Time Between Overhaul (TBO) extension to 2,600 hours for a broad range of its factory new and factory rebuilt engines. This change increases operating hours between mandatory overhauls for many fixed‑wing and rotorcraft applications while retaining existing calendar limits and model‑specific exclusions.

Key benefits
  • +400 hours for many fixed‑wing models (base TBO increased from 2,200 to 2,600 hours)
  • +300 hours for many rotorcraft models
  • Aerobatic engine TBO aligned to the corresponding base model where applicable
  • Crop‑dusting operational limitations removed for eligible models
  • No frequent‑use requirement to qualify
  • Warranty extension options for high‑frequency operators (subject to model/conditions)

Applicability & exclusions
The 2,600‑hour TBO applies to a large majority of Lycoming factory new and factory rebuilt engines across fixed‑wing and rotorcraft categories. Exclusions include turbocharged, certain high‑speed and high‑horsepower models. Eligibility depends on the specific engine model and its factory construction or last overhaul record. Engines that have been overhauled (factory or third‑party) are generally not eligible for the 2,600‑hour TBO; engines overhauled using genuine Lycoming parts and approved procedures may be eligible for a maximum 2,400‑hour TBO.

Calendar limit and compliance
There is no change to the calendar TBO: Lycoming engines remain subject to a 12‑year calendar overhaul interval measured from entry into service or last overhaul. Both the hour‑based TBO and the calendar limit apply; whichever limit is reached first governs overhaul timing.

Notes & references
Not all engine models qualify. Refer to Service Instruction SI1009 for the complete list of eligible models, specific conditions and any model‑based limitations. Operators must consult the latest approved Lycoming Engines technical publications for definitive maintenance and approval guidance.

Technical specifications
  • New base operating‑hours TBO: 2,600 hours (for eligible factory new and factory rebuilt engines)
  • Fixed‑wing increase: +400 hours over previous 2,200‑hour standard
  • Rotorcraft increase: +300 hours over previous base
  • Aerobatic engine TBO aligned with base model where applicable
  • Crop‑dusting operational limitations removed for eligible models
  • No frequent‑use requirement to qualify
  • Warranty extension available for high‑frequency operators (subject to model/conditions)
  • Exclusions: turbocharged, certain high‑speed and high‑horsepower models
  • Engines overhauled (factory or third‑party) generally not eligible for 2,600‑hour TBO; maximum 2,400‑hour TBO may apply if overhauled with genuine parts and approved procedures
  • Calendar overhaul interval remains 12 years
