OverviewSanmac® 4541 is a titanium-stabilized austenitic chromium-nickel steel supplied as billets for industrial applications where AISI 304/304L shows insufficient corrosion resistance. Machinability is improved by the Sandvik Machinability Concept while retaining corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Forms of supply / Sizes and tolerances- Produced as round-cornered square and round billets in a wide range of sizes; larger sizes offered on request.
- Square billets (rolled/forged condition) — examples: 80 mm (tolerance ±2, length 4–6.3 m); 100–150 mm (±3, length 4–6.3 m); 160–200 mm (±4, length 4–6.3 m); >200–350 mm (±5, length 3–5.3 m).
- Peel turned round billets — examples: 75–200 mm (5 mm interval) tolerance ±1, max length 10 m; >200–450 mm tolerance ±3, length 3–8 m.
- Unground round billets — examples: ranges (77–193 mm) with tolerance ±2, max length 10 m (various discrete diameters listed).
- Surface conditions: Square billets — unground, spot ground or fully ground; Round billets — peel turned or black condition.
Mechanical properties (solution annealed and quenched condition)- At 20°C (68°F), metric: R_p0.2 ≥ 210 MPa; R_p1.0 ≥ 245 MPa; R_m 515–700 MPa; Elongation A ≥ 40%; Reduction of area Z ≥ 50%; Hardness HB ≤ 215.
- Imperial units: R_p0.2 ≥ 30.5 ksi; R_p1.0 ≥ 35.5 ksi; R_m 75–101.5 ksi; Elongation ≥ 40%; Reduction of area ≥ 50%; HB ≤ 215.
- Impact strength: Very good at room and cryogenic temperatures. Tests on bar meet 60 J (44 ft-lb) at -196°C (-320°F) per EN 13445-2 (UFPV-2) and EN 10272.
- High temperature examples (metric): 100°C → R_p0.2 min 175 MPa, R_p1.0 min 205 MPa, R_m min 440 MPa; 200°C → R_p0.2 155 MPa, R_p1.0 185 MPa, R_m 390 MPa; values provided up to 500°C (see datasheet for full tables).
Machining- Sanmac® denotes the Sandvik Machinability Concept: improved machinability via optimized non-metallic inclusions, controlled chemistry and production parameters while maintaining corrosion resistance and strength.
- Detailed tool and cutting data are provided in brochure S-029-ENG (reference); product-specific machining data available on the datasheet.
- Turning — recommended starting values: MF (GC2015) feed 0.15 mm/rev, cutting speed 240 m/min (finishing); MM (GC2025) feed 0.25 mm/rev, 210 m/min (medium); MR (GC2025) feed 0.30 mm/rev, 180 m/min (medium-to-rough).
- Drilling — short hole drilling 12.7–58 mm with Coromant U-drill R416.2 (inserts GC1020/GC3040) feeds 0.04–0.18 mm/rev, cutting speeds 150–200 m/min; drilling with Coromant Delta C (R415.5, GC1220) for 3–12.7 mm: feed 0.08–0.22 mm/rev, cutting speed 40 m/min.
- Milling — dry milling preferred; example speeds with CoroMill: roughing MM-2030 at 180 m/min, finishing ML-2030 at 225 m/min (starting values).
- Threading/tapping/sawing — indexable inserts for external threads; coated taps recommended (4–15 m/min); band sawing typically 45–50 m/min.
