Description

Product overview
This face seal uses a spring energizer enclosed in a C-Seal jacket to provide a self-pressure-activated, metal-to-metal sealing solution. The combination of base metals and surface treatments enables reliable sealing of aggressive fluids across extreme temperatures and pressures with long-term stability.

Applications
  • Pressure vessels
  • Hand-holes
  • Steam generators
  • High-demand applications requiring very low leakage rates under high load

Design and operation
The energizing spring applies uniform preload to the jacket, maintaining a controlled contact load on sealing faces. The design requires moderate sliding force; this can be tuned to minimise wear and prevent surface damage in dry or poorly lubricated conditions.

Design (special shapes)
Spring-energized C-Seals are manufactured in circular and non-circular configurations. Non-circular forms often require special tooling. Key relationships exist between free height and corner radii. Examples of produced shapes: square, rectangular, oval, racetrack.

Standard specifications
Materials & Springs: Materials: Alloy X-750, Alloy 718, 304 SS (other materials on request). Springs: Alloy X-750, Alloy 718, 302 SS, Elgiloy®, Nimonic 90.
Typical use: Applications demanding very low leakage under high clamping loads.
Temperature range: Cryogenic to +1100°C (+2012°F).
Pressure range: Ultra high vacuum to 79,770 psi (5,500 bar).
Leakage rate: 1e-2 to 1e-12 mbar·l/s (depending on post-treatment).
Clamping load: 70 to 800 N/mm.
Dimensions: Face/Radial diameter: 9.5 mm to 4500 mm; Cross-section: 1.19 to 12.7 mm.
Minimum tolerances: ±0.05 mm.

Additional information
Spring-energized face seals are specified where tight leakage control is required. They can be supplied in a range of metals, spring alloys and surface treatments to meet high-temperature, high-pressure and aggressive chemical environments.
